The Hakka are a unique ethnic sub-group of the Han. They have well reserved traditional beliefs and cultures, and are thought to be of royal blood. The Chinese characters for Hakka (客家) mean “guest family”. Hakka folks reside in their fortified roundhouses in exchange for working in the paddy fields. They have a distinct dialect that is somewhat related to Mandarin, and though they are Han Chinese, their customs are different.
